Long ago, a beautiful young mare—Anala—roamed the land. Her coat was the
color of the sand, and glimmered like gold in the sunlight. Her mane and tail
were a soft brown, and her eyes heather purple. Fine-boned and fast, she was
sought after by many stallions who wished to recruit her into their herds. Of
these stallions, she fell in love with two—Jadaan, a silvery-white stallion, and
Poison, a tall, nightmare-black stag. She was torn between the two, unable to
choose. She became round with foal, and it was unclear which stag had sired
her unborn child. Jadaan and Poison recruited hundreds of equines each, and a
mighty battle was fought between their lands. But the stags didn't join their
herds in the battle—they sought out Anala and tried to force her to choose
between them. When she was unable to, a bloody battle took place. Both
stags were killed, and Anala wept beneath the elegant branches of a willow
tree. Among the mayhem, a handful of equines stepped aside, agreeing that
there should be peace. These were said to be the first neutrals in this land.
They claimed the battleground territory between the other two herds. Jadaan's
followers chose to follow the Light of the sun. They were idealistic and
optimistic. On the other hand, Poison's followers were dark, bloodthirsty
creatures who thrived in the shadows of the night.
Many seasons have passed since Anala's time. Many generations have risen
and fallen. And over the years, the Lights and Darks have remained in constant
battle. The only equines who are able to keep the peace are the
Neutrals—usually. But sometimes not even the Neutrals can stop the mayhem.
