Time.Of.The.Herla
When The Lore Is Bruised And Broken,
Shattered Like A Blasted Tree,
Then Shall Herne Be Justly Woken,
Born To Set The Herla Free.
Summery Of The Book:
Rannoch was born the night his father, Brechin was murdered. There is a prophecy among the deer, a prophecy about Herne, the deer God. It is said Herne will be born, and will destroy the notorious Sgorr, who killed Rannoch’s father. Sgorr wishes to have power over the High Lands, as well as the Low, enslaving the other Lera (the deer word for animals), and to have all of the other herds pay him homage. Sgorr, out of hate for Brechin, has set out to destroy Rannoch. Rannoch’s mother, in desperation to save him, switches Rannoch with the stillborn calf of another hind. The hind, Bracken, flees the herd, along with a few other hinds, that wish to protect their calves from the evil Sgorr. Rannoch was born with a fawn mark in the shape of an oak leaf, and was switched at birth, and the first part of a verse in the prophecy goes like this: On his brow a leaf of oaken, changeling child shall be his fate. As they travel, they are pursued by a band of Sgorrla, (Sgorr’s soldiers) that Sgorr has sent after them. Sgorr, too has heard the prophecy, and is afraid that Rannoch might be the one the prophecy predicts will destroy him. Well might Sgorr be afraid, for as they travel, Rannoch begins to understand the other Lera, which no deer has ever done before, thus the second line of the verse: Understanding words strange spoken, chased by anger, fear and hate. Sgorr took care of the chased by anger, fear and hate part! Could Rannoch possibly be Herne? Rannoch doesn’t think so, but he knows that he must stop Sgorr from enslaving the Lera and the other herds. They say that Sgorr has a terrible secret. Will Rannoch be able to find it with a band of Sgorrla hot on his trail, and if he does, will he be able to use it against Sgorr? Read Fire Bringer to find out! The setting is in old time Scotland, called Scotia in the book, when there is a great war, and Humans are roaming the land, destroying each other. It is 200 years after the 4 tribes of Caledonia- the Scots, the Picts, the Britons and the Angles came together to from the Kingdom of Scotia. The setting affects the story because the men and the war are yet another thing for the deer to be frightened and wary of. There is a character that is one of the most important and that I think I should describe because I think that you should realize just how evil and important he is- Sgorr. Sgorr is trying to take over the High Lands, enslaving the Lera, and forcing the herds to pay him homage. Sgorr wants to kill Rannoch because of the prophecy, and kills needlessly to show his power. Sgorr also wants to kill all the Outriders of all the herds in the land. The Outriders are the stags that protect the herd, warning of danger and fighting if need be. Brechin, Rannoch’s father, was the Captain of the Outriders in the herd that Rannoch was born in. Sgorr wants to replace them with his Sgorrla, who kill weaklings and encourage fawns to spy on their parents, in case of a rebellion, and who are loyal to Sgorr. Rannoch is the only one who can stop him
